Fatherhood

I can't say much about fatherhood yet since I've only been a father for 2 weeks (in around 3 hours from now). To try to explain what it's like to have a child, a son, well... I won't say 'exhausting' though I think that's probably what a lot of people might say. True, it is tiring, and the thought of getting 7 or 8 hours of undisturbed sleep is lunacy. 7 or 8 hours? In a row? Yeah, right! Sleep redefines itself as 2 or 3 hours of rest here and there. But exhausting is only a small part of it, and c'mon it's part of the territory.

I think I know how to describe the feeling of having a child (admittedly it probably won't make much sense to anyone but me). Someone asked me if I thought about how life would ever be normal again. I considered that and realized that life doesn't feel anything but normal despite the huge change. So I guess I have to say that having a child redefines your sense of normality. I can't imagine not having a baby - what was life like before? I don't know but I don't want it any other way than it is right now.

Zachary's a great kid already. He sleeps a lot, fascinates us with his myriad of facial expressions, rarely cries inconsolably (only when he's hungry and doesn't want to wait through the diaper change or bath he's currently experiencing), and is objectively cute (everyone says so). Before he was born I thought I would be impatient for him to get older so he could do lots of fun stuff with his parents, especially stuff that his dad misses from when he was a kid. But so far I don't want him to change at all. (Except maybe not peeing all over the place.)
