Utilizing Javascript for image replacement techniques is a great strategy in order to ensure graceful degradation. At least until CSS is able to check for image support anyway. Check out this method and the comments section. Shaun Inman came up with an excellent strategy that I may be using in the very near future. It's not a new strategy, using Javascript for this type of thing, but these are some great new methods.

It is a little annoying that Javascript has to handle such an important part of the presentational aspect, but I love how concise and effective it can be.
