Mourning Macromedia

Nope, no matter how I say it, it still doesn't sound right. It's like Coke buying Pepsi (and notice I didn't say 'Pepsi buying Coke'). I know I shouldn't be surprised - companies buy other companies all the time (though why it's legal for a company to buy its rival is beyond me). But I'm still in a state of shock.

In the post on MacCentral, it says this deal puts Adobe squarely in the path of rival Microsoft Corp. Now a statement like this, for me, justifies almost anything. Apple could announce they were taking over Micronesia because it would help them compete with Microsoft, and I'd be okay with it. Of course, that might also be due to the fact that Micronesia doesn't exactly rank very highly on my List of Countries That, If They Were Taken Over By Foreign Powers, Would Be Especially Troubling. Anyway, for some reason in this circumstance, Adobe playing that card doesn't mean much to me. Maybe because Microsoft doesn't exactly have anything that competes with Adobe or Macromedia. And it's Adobe...

Issues aside, my grief for Macromedia is starting to set in. It's not a perfect company, but it is the company that brought me Fireworks, Freehand, and Dreamweaver. If all these programs were to suddenly disappear, which seems somewhat likely given this situation, I would mourn the loss of Fireworks the most. No it doesn't do photo editing like Photoshop, but it does pretty much everything else better, at least from a web design point of view.

Which reminds me, I should go back up my Studio MX CD, just in case.
