The Day of the Tiger

I had two Apple-related wishes for my birthday: first, that Apple would announce and/or release Tiger, the latest version of the best operating system on any platform; and second, that Apple would update their G5 iMac line to faster processors and more memory (and whatever fun additions they dream up).

Well, one out of two ain't bad. Especially since the rumor sites indicate updates for both Power Mac G5's and iMac G5's are on their way in the next few weeks.

I feel like a kid again at times like these, looking through a toy catalogue and imagining what it would be like to have that sprawling G.I. Joe adventure set, or that cool Erector set. I can't wait to start using Automator, and the Dashboard. Oh, and I'm dying to see what Quicksilver will be able to do with Spotlight's power under the hood.

I feel sorry for Windows people. Mainly because they are convinced that computers ought to be confusing, irritating, damnedly frustrating, and they don't know that it ought to just work, like the Mac. And it should easily let you do things like what iLife lets you do. Instead they're frantically installing virus updates, downloading drivers, and screaming in frustration when they get the blue screen of death and find that the 45-page paper they just wrote is now corrupted.

I'm also convinced they don't get excited about the latest version of Windows like we Mac users do about Panther and Tiger. I think when they hear about a new version of Windows, they think "oh maybe I won't get as many viruses now", or "I wonder if they're going to give me another screensaver besides Pipes", or even "I hope it's prettier, like the Mac."

Just 17 days left...
