Slipstream
True enough to their word, Verizon kicked in my DSL and I'm back online at a decent transfer rate (despite comments by a certain JM). They sweetened the pot by activating the service a day early. Woo hoo!
So I thought I'd give plug-n-play a chance and just connect everything and see if it worked without having to tweak any settings. DSL modem to the phone jack, wired router to the modem, Airport Express to the router, Tivo to the router... flip open the laptop, change network location to 'Home'... and voila! Google pops up and I'm in the digital slipstream once again! I love it when things work on the first go-round. Of course I'd set everything up in the last apartment so I guess it's not miraculous or anything that it worked , but still a nice surprise.
The side effect to the downtime is that I was finally inspired to set up MySQL on my Powerbook. I'd tried before but I kept get the same error that I found to be well-documented on the web. Well-documented in this case meaning lots of people saying that they get the error too. Big help.
Thanks to Eric Meyer, I stumbled across Complete MySQL and I was up and running within 5 minutes. I finally got my PHP scripts working in tandem with MySQL last evening, post-DSL activation, but it's still going to be extremely useful being able to develop entirely on my Mac. So thanks Verizon... I guess...
